TON
TON
(BENTWOOD FURNITURE FACTORIES)
History
More than 160 years ago, the German carpenter and entrepreneur Michael Thonet (1796–1871) chose the town of Bystřice pod Hostýnem in the midst of beech forests as the location for another of his factories. In 1953, the company TON adopted his principles of bending wood after a change in ownership structures and names. The company still uses these traditional methods today.
Technology
The most commonly processed wood is beech, which has the best bending properties. Even though TON uses modern machines, some tasks, such as inserting steam-saturated timber into molds and securing it with special flange to prevent cracking, can only be done by people. One possessing not only strength, but mainly a feeling for the work.
The present
Today, the designers from TON have revived the traditional production methods with modern shapes.
